I've been painting a lot out-in-the-open again lately. What a wonderful reason to go out and spend time outside! Just me, my painting gear and the subject. Being totally immersed in the landscape you're painting is just such a different, more profound way of creating than the process I am used to.
In much of my painting and drawing I work from the imagination, with some photographic references to fill-in the gaps. While making the big pen-and-oil planets that I've been creating lately I do sometimes go out to be inspired by, for instance, the shapes of the leaves I encounter and by the way the contours of the vegetation overlap and disappear into the distance. But painting en-plein-air (in-open-air), as it is often called, is a whole different ballgame.
